Designer Events by LaKisha was birthed from my love for designing and planning. We’ve had the pleasure of planning small to large corporate events. Beautiful spaces just don’t happen, they are created. We will take your event from concept to complete implementation. With many years of experience, we know first hand what it takes to plan that memorable event. Our mission is providing a designer’s experience for every client every time. With my passion for event planning, I’m able to meet new people and share my knowledge and experience.

I have a degree in Interior Design and a degree in Management specializing in Small Business & Entrepreneurship.

What are some tips for creating an elegant and memorable event on a tight budget?

When your client comes and tells you they have a certain budget but they want these certain things, you look like, really? On this budget you just told me?!

One place that is great to keep you on budget with some great products is the dollar store. Yes, I said it. They have anything like any other high-end store but just cheaper. You can also do a lot of DIY. Check Pinterest for ideas and also search the web. You may have some things in your house you could probably use for an event as well. Being creative is the key to making your event memorable.

How important are your relationships with vendors and what are some ways that you successfully cultivate and ensure good rapport?

Any relationship in business is important. But, when it comes to vendors, relationships are very important. I like to build rapport with vendors I have chemistry with. I like to call them “my preferred” vendors. Vendors are the most important part of an event, besides me. Knowing how the vendors work, what their fees are and how they operate are very important. Maintaining that relationship with them is critical to having a successful event.

What’s the most exciting thing on the horizon for you personally or professionally?

I was contacted by an international business to plan a women’s conference and awards event. This is a 2-day women empowerment event. This will be the first of it’s kind. There will be 7 continents and over 30 countries partaking in this event. There will be over 100 awards presented to individuals who are making a difference in the world. Awards will be given out in industries such as media, philanthropy, sports, government, banking, etc.

What inspired you to launch your own company in the event industry? How long did it take from initially having the idea to setting up and starting to attract a client base?

I always knew I wanted to be a business owner. God gave me many talents. The issue I had was, what type of business did I want to start? So, after I had my daughter, I decided I wasn’t going back to work and I was going to start my business.

I planned a wedding reception for my brother and his bride. It was a huge hit, so I thought, why not? I started Designer Events by LaKisha.

My first year in business was pretty much preparing myself for the role of business owner. It was scary. There was no more going to a 9 to 5. If I didn’t get out and network to meet new people, no one would know about my business. I’ve been in business for 3 years and, year after year, it keeps getting better. Super excited about what 2020 will bring.

What are some things you wished you knew before starting your businesses?

This is a good one. Starting a business is stressful. Oh my…especially starting a business with little money or no money. No one knows what a business owner goes through. Credit cards get maxed out, bills become delinquent, your spouse is looking at you like, really, you need to get a job.

Knowing what it takes and how long it takes to get noticed is something I wished I knew before starting my business. How to get clients? What networking events to go to? Why is it so hard to get business credit? The list goes on.
